One of the consequences of the United Kingdom leaving the
European Union will most likely be an unraveling of the "United"
Kingdom! How ironic. It seems a no brainer that Scotland will be checking out
ASAP...and then Northern Ireland will achieve what years of war could not. I
don't have a horse is this race, but it does seem like an interesting turn that
will bite the exitor's in the balls in the near time--say the next 5 years. For
what was once a great Empire, to now shoot itself in the foot...
While I think it's likely that Scotland will vote for independence within the next two years, I don't think that Northern Ireland will do the same. The people who voted "Remain" there were mostly Catholics, but the reins of power there are firmly held in the hand of the Protestant Presbyterians, who mostly voted "Leave". They still believe that the Pope is the Antichrist and that the Irish Republic is run by wee leprechauns who want to annex the Republic to the Vatican.
ReplyDeleteThe irony about this is that it's not about the UK leaving the EU. It's about a split in the Tory party. Had we still been ruled by a Coalition government after the 2015 General Election, the referendum would never have happened.
