Smithsonian National Zoo, Chapter 5

On the way to the Small Mammal House, a quick visit with the Przewalski's Horses, Equus ferus przewalskii.  Like the North American Bison, the ancient horse--closest living relative to the horses of the Ice Age--once roamed Eastern Europe and Central Asia in great herds.  Today it is critically endangered.  The zoo is home to a breeding pair.  The darker animal is the stallion.  The zoo doesn't house many herbivores, no zebra, no giraffe, only a couple of gazelle/antelope species.  So the Przewalski's Horse is really its marquis representative of this form of animal life.  I happen to think they are also magnificent.
