I think the idea of a "Small
Mammal House" is an idiosyncratic one. It's not one that many other zoos have. Besides this one in Washington, D.C., I
have only encountered it at the Philadelphia Zoo. In the instance of Philadelphia's--it needs to be overhauled
and possibly just replaced out right.
The one here in DC is more in keeping with the quality of habitat
afforded small animals at zoos--but even here, I would prefer something more
expansive. Images from the Small
Animal House at the Smithsonian National Zoo, in order are: Fennec Fox,
Prehensile-tailed Porcupines (a family unit with a pup born at the National
Zoo), Red-Ruffed Lemurs, Golden Lion Tamarin, Prevost's Squirrel, and Screaming
Hairy Armadillo.
