Lunch done and I'm off to
tour the 18th - 20th century European galleries at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of
Art in Kansas City. These are
called the Bloch Galleries as their recent renovation benefitted from the same
benefactors who underwrote the construction of the modern addition to the
Museum in 2003. Galleries full of
lots of familiar artists and lovely works. I share 14 with you here--something for everyone I hope.

It's always a joy to discover a new artist I've never heard
of before. Don't let the name fool
you, HE was also born on the same day in January that I was--another sweet
discovery. And upon further
research, I realized that I must have seen his name before as he created some
very iconic works of art, but just didn't remember...

"The Garden of Les Mathurins at Pontoise" 1876,

The museum is home to several amazing works by
Pissarro. Look closely at this one
and then look at the detail next.

In this detail you can see this garden had a glass orb, and
the woman's reflection is captured by the artist in it. Amazing, eh?

Part of a van Gogh retrospective that I once saw at the
National Gallery of Art here in DC, it was like coming upon an old friend. Once you've committed a van Gogh to
your heart, it resides there forever.

Not a huge fan of Gauguin, but I do prefer his Brittany paintings over the Tahitian ones.
"Summer Mill with Shrouded Sky" 1905-1907, Piet
Mondrian (Dutch) 1872 - 1944
What a rare find, a Mondrian painting from before he became
the king of the abstract black and white grid with sparse primary colored
squares. His 1995 retrospective at
the National Gallery of Art in DC was mind blowing for me. If you ever get the chance to see his
work presented in its scope showing his evolution as an artist--do it!
