"Riding Alone For Thousands Of Miles" is both the title of a Chinese Folk Opera, and a metaphor for the relationship of a father and his son. Diagnosed with liver cancer, the son who harbors profound resentment over his emotional abandonment refuses to allow the father to visit him in the hospital. The son's wife, Rei, intermediates by giving the father a copy of his son's film project--a documentation of Chinese folk opera. Then the father decides to film a performance that the son was not able to as a gift to his dieing progeny. And in doing so a world that is utterly foreign to him opens up, challenges, and ultimately quickens his very humanity in ways that he had never imagined.

This is a 5 star film.
