A recent study showed that the middle medal is the most difficult medal to win. The Gold is clearly without baggage. Those receiving the bronze are left by-and-large humbled and grateful to have won anything in the company of such an elite group of athletes.
So the Silvers tend alone to perseverate over the fact that "but if," they would hold a medal that would make them #1.
