"Sleeping Bacchus" circa 1795, Anne-Louis Girodet
de Roucy-Trioson (French) 1767 - 1824
It's always a joy to discover a new artist I've never heard
of before. Don't let the name fool
you, HE was also born on the same day in January that I was--another sweet
discovery. And upon further
research, I realized that I must have seen his name before as he created some
very iconic works of art, but just didn't remember...
"Christ on the Sea of Galilee" circa 1841, Eugene
Delecroix (French) 1798 - 1863
"The Eruption of Vesuvius" 1825, Sebastian Pether
(English) 1790 - 1844
"Portrait of the Sculptor Paul Lemoyne" circa
1812, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French) 1786 - 1867
And I thought at first glance he looked like Lord Byron.
"The Illness of Pierrot" circa 1859, Thomas
Couture (French) 1815 - 1879
"White Lilacs in a Crystal Vase" 1882, Edouard
Manet (French) 1832 - 1883
"The Garden of Les Mathurins at Pontoise" 1876,
Camille Pissarro (French) 1830 - 1903
The museum is home to several amazing works by
Pissarro. Look closely at this one
and then look at the detail next.
See if you see was I saw.
In this detail you can see this garden had a glass orb, and
the woman's reflection is captured by the artist in it. Amazing, eh?
"Landscape, Île-de-France" 1876,
Jean-Baptiste-Armand Guillaumin (French) 1841 - 1927
"Restaurant Rispal at Asnieres" 1887, Vincent van
Gogh (Dutch) 1853 - 1890
Part of a van Gogh retrospective that I once saw at the
National Gallery of Art here in DC, it was like coming upon an old friend. Once you've committed a van Gogh to
your heart, it resides there forever.
"The Willow Tree" 1889, Paul Gauguin (French) 1848
- 1903
Not a huge fan of Gauguin, but I do prefer his Brittany paintings over the Tahitian ones.
"Summer Mill with Shrouded Sky" 1905-1907, Piet
Mondrian (Dutch) 1872 - 1944
What a rare find, a Mondrian painting from before he became
the king of the abstract black and white grid with sparse primary colored
squares. His 1995 retrospective at
the National Gallery of Art in DC was mind blowing for me. If you ever get the chance to see his
work presented in its scope showing his evolution as an artist--do it!
"Guitar Player" 1928, André Derain (French) 1880 - 1954
"Still Life with Oleander and Fruit" 1911, Albert
André (French) 1869 - 1954
"The Little Tragedy" 1933, André Masson (French)
1896 - 1987
