Garden Zoo Expands...in more ways than one

The arrival of two new Hartmann's Mountain Zebra foals necessitated the provision of a larger abode.

Which opened up their old digs to house a family of Greater Kudu.

A Black Rhino cow and her calf were added.

Also a family of Warthogs, though they be a little shy.

And finally a colony of Meerkats!  A real crowd pleaser.
One move, the flamingoes needed to be moved to the table after a incident involving a local squirrel...

DInner On The Deck

Started with a batch of fresh herbed cheesy potato fritters.

Ended with a petit sirloin steak and green beans, with watermelon and mango aloe punch.
And, of course, my companion extraordinaire!  My Romeo.

New Exhibit #1 Hartmann's Mountain Zebra

The herd of seven added an 8th with the birth of foal.  A rare species of Zebra.  A welcome addition.

New Exhibit #2 African Lions

The African Lion Pride also grew this year with the birth of five cubs.

Auntie lioness chides the cubs not to rough house!
On cup is more interested in his reflection the pool of water than his siblings.

New Exhibit #3 African Elephants

My herd of African Elephants consists of 3 adults.
And then this spring the birth a twin calfs to increase the herd to 5!

Like All Things....

My beloved boy is there to help me make it happen!
He was worried that he might have startled the African Elephants.....

Caitlyn Jenner

As a gay man, I guess I'm supposed to have an opinion on the metamorphosis of Bruce Jenner into Caitlyn Jenner.  And I do.  It's not very nuanced or sophisticated, but in a world of tremendous punditry and confusion, perhaps simple is best.

I wish Caitlyn all the best.  She's clearly in a position to live out the rest of her life in a charmed environment replete with every possible convenience and all the publicity any publicity-whore could want or need.

At no point in the reality of Bruce/Caitlyn's life was he/she ever in a place of ruin.  She is a shrewd lady.  Why, look at her chosen modus exposure: Vanity Fair?  Seriously?

My problem is not with her transition.   Everyone should be given the opportunity to live a life content and grounded.  My problem is how at every turn she uses the world about her to exact a measure of concern and sympathy and notoriety that ultimately has NOTHING to do with being transexual.

Please just go away.  Pretty please!

Kimchi, and Preserved (Moroccan) Lemons, and Vin d'Orange--Oh, My!

So jazzed by the D. I. Y. cookbook pages in the New York Times Food section.  So I stepped out on the limb!

Here are the first two: Left is a jar of Lemons curing according to a recipe from Morocco that includes Kosher salt, Black Pepper Corns, Bay Leaves and little else.  I am excited about the future possibilities...

Right is my first attempt at Kimchi, the spicy Korean cabbage side.  This is made with Salt, Hot Red Pepper flakes and powder, Ginger, Garlic, Napa Cabbage--Again, fairly simple.

Romeo's Week Later.....

It's been a rainy week.  Romeo doesn't do rain!

Romeo's Week Early

The sun was out and Romeo is ready to check out his world!

Dinner 15 June 04

I coated Turkey Cutlets with House-Autry batter flour and browned it in olive oil.  Made some Turkey Gravy with scallions and capers to garnish the cutlet.  Used the same pan to saute veggies: Carrots, Baby Portobellos, Zucchini and Sugar Snap Peas.  And made some instant Cheesy Whipped Potatoes.

Dinner 15 June 03

So easy!

Fry up a package of Pancetta.  Add 8 oz. of Baby Portobello Mushrooms sliced.  Mix and saute.  Add 1 cup of peas and cover.  Reduce heat and watch until they are bright green--maybe 1 minute.  Add a tub of Butoni Alfredo light sauce.  Serve over linguini and garnish with shaved parmesan cheese.  Freaking delicious!

First Exhibit

In my Zoo Gardens.  Somali (Reticulated) Giraffe.

Early June Blossoms

Orange and Yellow Butterfly Weed in the circles garden.
Other colored Echinacea.  The first of many Echinacea plants all around my gardens.

Geranium

This geranium has been in the family now for 4 years.  And it's so resilient.  Check it out: seven Blooms!
