Summer Vacation Redux #17: The Devil's Tower National Monument

The final visit on day 8 of my summer vacation cross-country Total Eclipse of the Sun road trip was not far over the state line into Wyoming. It wasn't a stop I had contemplated in advance, but when I realized how close it was to where I would be staying that night (Gillette), it was a no brainer. Devil's Tower of "Close Encounters of Third Kind" fame is the nations very first National Monument. It's also a stunning sight to behold practically popping up out of a ridge and wheat fields. There is a very small visitor center with some displays and a small gift shop in the park, as well as an array of touristy shops, restaurant and gas station just outside the entrance.
First view through the smoke of distant wild fires...
