The zoo is home to 4 African Elephants. One adult male, Tuffy, two Adult females, Felix and Anna, and one adolescent male, Samson the offspring of Tuffy and Felix. Anna is the old girl. She was born in South Africa in 1975 and came to be housed in a facility in New Jersey before being acquired by the Maryland zoo. Granted, Elephants in captivity share a lifespan not that dissimilar from humans. So Anna's 42 years cover perhaps 2/3's of her life. She is the wisdom of the herd having been here longer than any of the other members and having experienced the loss of previous compatriots. I think she is simple beautiful.
