Earlier this year, the zoo transforms half of it's Polar Bear exhibit into a home to a pair of orphaned Grizzly Bear cubs from Montana. The girls were left alone after their mother was killed and the transfer to Maryland Zoo is also an admission by the zoo that for the immediate future it will be a one Polar Bear zoo. The recent past the zoo was home to three Polar Bears, and through a series of tragic events, two of them died. One species misfortune becomes another's opportunity. The young bears are markedly different in size and so they are called "Big Bear" and "Little Bear".

The Bears know that their trainer is nearby cleaning their "den". She is their source for food and so they anticipate lunch, too. |

Big Bear takes a little "time out" behind a faux stone totem. |

Little Bear likes to claw at wood, a natural activity in search of termites or honey. |
